peregrine at The Basement, Sydney, August 20

Peregrine returns to Sydney’s temple of jazz and blues, The Basement, Saturday August 20, in a killer triple bill that is shared with Melbourne’s incredible carnival cabaret kings ‘The Tiger and Me‘ and up-and-coming Sydney folk n’ rollers ‘Evan and the Brave‘.

Felix warms up the ‘Tigram’ moves…

Its been a long time between drinks for the full five-piece peregrine experience – this will be the first full band show in Sydney since the sold-out launch of the ‘Overdue’ EP in November.

It comes after peregrine’s Brett Winterford completed two runs of shows in Europe, culminating in a 17-show stretch across Germany in July.

Make sure you book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Tour Diary: Berlin, the last stop

I made it! 17 shows in 17 cities in 17 days. Not quite Mijo’s 43 but a big effort nonetheless!

Our not-so-secret show at Taqueria Florian was packed, and I was amazed to see old friends from Australia mixed in with folks I have met elsewhere in Germany during this tour. It was incredible that friends from Hamm, Goerlitz, Jena and Weimar were all on hand to see me off!

Steffen was once again great as an opener, and I had the great pleasure of introducing my friend Ray Mann to his first audience in Berlin. It will no doubt be the first of many, he really nailed it. And for once I managed to get through my last show of a tour without losing my voice! A new high.

And now after just a few hours sleep I am Heathrow-bound. Surreal.

Lena just had a good laugh – as I stepped into the car to leave for the airport I managed to plant my foot in a big pile of dog poo. And that’s seriously the absolute worst thing that happened on the tour! We have been incredibly lucky and so many people came together to make it happen.

It’s been unforgettable and a real privilege. Hope I see you all again soon.

Tour Diary: Making home in Magdeburg

Coming to Magdeburg is always a joy, the birthplace of vondomachine has a very special place in my heart, mostly because of the wonderful people who helped start this whole adventure.

We had the unfortunate situation of a rainstorm washing out our return to Strandbar, but our compromise was every bit as special.

A little while ago, many of our friends in Magdeburg made a decision to all live in the same building, each renting an apartment. It was an amazing idea, a village within a building, and old friends living right in each others faces.

So today when I visit these great friends in Magdeburg I get to see them all in one place. And wouldn’t you know it, they have a bar on the bottom floor.

Karo from Once Upon A Rooftop was unfortunately ill, but her partner in crime Stephan handled the solo responsibilities well and also joined me for a few songs.

But more importantly we all broke bread together in the morning.

Tour Diary: Bunker in Bremen

Wow… Best venue on the tour.

For whatever reason (something to do with the soil), the people of Bremen built their concrete bunkers above ground during WWII, rather than underground.

Now a clever architect has built a light-filled home made of steel and glass atop one such bunker, with a lovely grass lawn. And down in the bunker the home’s residents have a speakeasy that turns the gloomy building’s historical meaning on it’s head.

Now the people of Bremen huddle together for drum n bass rather than the boom of bombs, and a symbol of war has become a temple of peace!

It’s still a fairly private affair however, run as a not-for-profit and to an invite-only crowd – a much larger version of Sydney’s High Tea.

We had a great turn out, helped in part by promo king Joshi, and the double-billing of a Bremen reggae band Midnight Marauders.

Big thanks to Sebastian, Anne and our other hosts at the Bunker for one of the more memorable shows I will ever do!

Tour Diary: A Hamm-ful

The party goes on in the room next door as I write. Tonight we were treated to some genuine Deutsch folk music from our hosts, and my show was recorded.

Unfortunately I am too exhausted to socialise as I should, 14 nights on the trot have taken their toll on me. The food is great, there is laughter and music, a whole family of musicians, and I am in a side room cuddling a cat.

Tour Diary: Can you say Munchengladbach?

Yeah! MG Action Town!

So it rained like a true German summer today. It poured down and washed out our Garden concert. Our gracious host Nadine scoured for extra options and we ended up playing in a large flat, where I learned the true meaning of ‘High Tea’, among other things.

MG is among a slew of cities that closely border each other to Germany’s west, alongside better known cousins Koln and Dusseldorf.

It has its charms. We stayed in a cute top floor apartment with bell-shaped windows and had a nice healthy argument from breakfast until 4pm. And then it rained again!

Big thanks to Dat Nadinchen and Markus especially for some great stories and hospitality.

Tour Diary: Squeezing in a show in Marburg

Another strange and wonderful show, this time in a rooftop flat in Marburg. Mijo Biscan must have done something very right here last time around because they had twice as many attendees as expected and it was quite the squeeze! (Mijo, thanks again for blazing the trail!)

Tonight I finished with a relatively new song, ‘Bridgeclimber’, which I have become prone to playing occasionally on this tour.

Friends at home might like to know that it is a tribute to our friend Kirk, whose passing had a big impact on me. I would like to think he would love the idea of this tour and be proud to have inspired my travels.

Thanks tonight to our hosts Jan, Johan, Anne and Nadia…

Tour Diary: Mainz and my good fortune

This morning it dawned on me as I woke that I am incredibly lucky.

In Mainz last night, yet another bar filled with great characters, and I sang with confidence and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I met wonderful people like Robert and Bandit.

We are sold out of peregrine albums.

Back home High Tea is booked out every week, and I feel a little bit of that experience in every show here.

I am young(ish), I am in love, I enjoy my job, I live in paradise and have great friends across the world.

And it is mostly thanks to you.

Tour Diary: Heidelberg house party

Remember the early peregrine days, dancing at the Excelsior or the Gaf?

That was the atmosphere at Heidelberg tonight as our hosts and their friends celebrated finishing their exams. They weren’t just open to the singalongs on ‘Hey Make Believer’ but even rose to their feet for ‘Dear John Letter’ and ‘The powers that be’ to dance. Yes, spontaneous dancing to peregrine songs being performed on an acoustic guitar. I believe we may even have video evidence to share.

Suffice to say I found it most agreeable. Fantastic, even.

Tour Diary: In love with Freiburg

They say that if you step into the stream in Freiburg’s old town, you have to marry a local girl. There are a lot of other reasons to hang out here.

1. It’s a stones throw from the Bodensee (below) and Austria in one direction, Basel in Switzerland in another, France in another and the rest of Germany the other.

20110724-062418.jpg

2. It’s wrapped on most sides by the black forest.

3. One of the gargoyles on it’s aincent Cathedral is mooning somebody. (remember mooning? it was all the rage before planking).

4. Vaubar.

It was a great show, and a real highlight to meet many of the folks afterwards. Thanks so much to Benny, Chris, Tim and Andrew.
